Infovox iVox

Saying goodbye is never easy, but we are thankful to have you as a friend on this journey. After a long talk and much thought, AssistiveWare and Acapela Group have decided to discontinue development of Infovox iVox due to a shrinking user base and increasing development and support costs. This was not an easy decision, but with the current pandemic economic crisis, the fact that macOS allows you to download free multilingual voices, and AssistiveWare’s shifted focus toward AAC, we were compelled to bring up the topic we could no longer ignore.

To make this change as easy as possible, here are the details you need to know:

  • The purchase additional voice credits ended 31 December 2020. It is no longer possible to purchase additional credits.
  • Remaining voice credits can be used to activate voices until 31 August 2021.
  • Infovox iVox version 4.6 will support macOS 11 (Big Sur) but only on Intel based Macs, and not on the Apple Silicon (M1) processors.
  • Support for Infovox iVox will end on 31 August 2021.
  • Installed Infovox iVox voices will remain active/usable on current software/hardware combinations as long as possible, allowing users to re-install their voices on compatible macOS versions.

KeyStrokes

We have discontinued the sales of KeyStrokes after macOS High Sierra (10.13) was released.

In 2002, KeyStrokes was the first AT product for Mac OS X. It has provided access to Mac OS X for people with motor-challenges who could not use a physical keyboard. Over the years it has developed into the gold standard for on-screen keyboards. We are happy to report that with macOS High Sierra (10.13), Apple includes an on-screen keyboard that will provide essential on-screen keyboard functionality right inside macOS.

Now macOS High Sierra (10.13) is publicly released you can find these features in the Accessibility panel of the System Preferences. Because macOS 10.14, the next version after High Sierra, is expected to only work with 64 bit native applications, KeyStrokes will not be able to run on 10.14.

Please feel free to contact us at support@assistiveware.com if you have any questions.

SwitchXS

SwitchXS was the first product to provide access to Mac OS X for switch users. It has served many people well for many years, but Apple has continued to improve the built-in Mac accessibility features. Sales of SwitchXS have been discontinued because macOS now offers most of the scanning features SwitchXS was originally designed for. You can find all these features in the Switch Control section of the Accessibility panel of the System Preferences. Switch Control now in many ways surpasses SwitchXS and has become a better option for switch users wanting to access macOS. Additionally, it is free and pre-installed as part of macOS.

Proloquo

Proloquo was the first Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) solution for Mac OS X. Over the last couple of years, we have seen interest in Proloquo dwindling with more and more user switching to iPhone or iPad for their AAC needs. AAC users now prefer to use apps such as Proloquo2Go and Proloquo4Text on iOS and macOS.

For AAC users looking for a way to use their Mac as a communication device, we recommend using Proloquo2Go and/or Proloquo4Text.

VisioVoice

VisioVoice was the first third-party product to provide access to Mac OS X for people with vision impairments. It has served many people well for many years, but Apple has continued to improve the built-in Mac accessibility features. Sales of VisioVoice have been discontinued because macOS now offers most of the zoom features VisioVoice was originally designed for. You can find all these accessibility options in the Accessibility panel of the System Preferences. It comes free with macOS.

If you are looking for an alternative for VisioVoice's text reader functionality take a look at Wrise, which not only provides a great accessible text reader but also offers a range of accessible word processing features.
